Liver cancer, also known as hepatocellular carcinoma, develops in people who already have suffered from a liver condition earlier on.
Many conditions like cirrhosis of the liver and fatty liver disease can lead to liver cancer in such people. Habits like alcoholism only guarantee the possibility of cancer. Exposure to certain industrial chemicals can also cause the cancer in some people. Many people do not exhibit any visible symptoms of cancer, and they usually do not experience any. It is only in the advanced stages that they come to know of it. Liver cancer is typically not known to spread because the liver is a big organ, and most probably the tumor will be contained within it. However, there have been cases where the cancer has spread to the lungs. Some of the most common symptoms of this are constant cough and shortness of breath.
A person with liver cancer may develop jaundice at an advanced stage and also go through weight loss which is unintentional as the patients suffer from a severe loss of appetite. Their skin may have a permanent yellowish tinge, and this tinge may be also found in the eyes. In advanced stages, they experience severe pain in the abdomen and also near the shoulder blades.
Unless the doctor conducts the test for cancer at the right time these symptoms do not have any meaning. Jaundice is the only sure shot symptom that can directly lead to the diagnosis of the disease. However, in nearly 80 percent of the people jaundice occurs only in advanced stages when the liver begins to fail due to the cancer.
