Liver failure is caused when a large portion of the liver is damaged and it suddenly ceases to function as a result.
This type of damage is caused by cancer or cirrhosis, and if the liver has been neglected for a long period of time. Liver failure is not something that will occur suddenly when you did not even feel it or know about it.It is actually caused due to a progressive disorder and towards the end a person may experience several symptoms. However, liver failure is a life threatening condition and within a few hours of complete failure, it can cause death. Liver failure occurs gradually and over a period of time.
Liver failure has been divided into subtypes by doctors because it happens over a period of time. Actually the liver is a very big organ. It is slightly bigger than a football. It takes a long time for the whole organ to be diseased and cease its functioning. So a person is bound to know sooner or later. Acute liver failure is when the failure is happening very rapidly. More and more functions of the liver stop, and the body fails to respond gradually. The whole thing can happen in as little time as 48 hours.
The failure of the liver depends on how severe the disease is and if the attack is severe, then it may just stop functioning. Some of the causes that can lead to liver failure are hepatitis C and B, alcoholism, cirrhosis, hemachromastasis, malnutrition, prolonged usage of acetaminophen, certain medications like antibiotics and statins, and eating poisonous mushrooms.
