Liver failure occurs when the liver loses its ability to function completely. This type of failure is not rapid in nature, and in fact, it develops over a period of time.

Several people will notice some symptoms gradually, and the symptoms become more evident once the disease has progressed to an advanced level.Liver failure can happen over a period of several months. Towards the end, it may fail completely within a span of 48 hours. The liver has many functions like helping in digesting food, producing bile for digestion, breaking down the blood cells into energy and eliminating toxins from the body along with purifying the blood. It is also a large organ because it has to carry out so many functions in the body.

There are two types of liver failure characterized by medical science, namely chronic and acute failures, and doctors use either of them to describe the condition based on several factors.

An acute failure can occur within 48 hours of developing a serious condition. In this, the deterioration of the liver happens very rapidly. In a chronic liver failure, the deterioration of the liver happens gradually. Cancer is an example of chronic liver failure. Liver cancer that progresses and is in an advanced stage will cause the liver to fail gradually. In this case, the doctors already know what to expect.

The symptoms of acute liver failure is severe pain in the abdomen and it appears almost like a seizure. The person may also start vomiting and sometimes it may be blood. In chronic liver failure, the symptoms could be swelling of legs, pain in abdomen, itching, fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss and weakness.
