The liver helps the body to digest food. It cleanses the blood, throws out the toxins from it and converts the red blood cells into energy for the body.

When the liver is affected by disease, it stops functioning properly leading to several other conditions. Liver disease can be caused due to excessive alcoholism. Some of the other causes are chronic diseases like cirrhosis and cancer.Prolonged use of certain medications like antibiotics, and exposure to chemicals can also cause liver damage. People with other conditions like diabetes and fatty liver disease can also end up with liver failure.

One of the most common symptoms of liver failure is noticing a yellowish tinge in the skin. The skin and eyes look yellowish, and this means the liver is not functioning properly. Some people may also experience an itchy skin and develop rashes. You may even notice spider like veins on your feet and legs. The legs may be swollen and there may be pain in abdomen. Even the abdomen can be swollen. When the abdomen is swollen, there may be other problems like dark and smelly urine, bloody or pale stools.

People with liver damage have a tough time with infections and their body cannot fight them too well. They may fall sick frequently. They also experience a loss of appetite, and severe and chronic fatigue. The spleen is enlarged and as a result there may be brain damage or bleeding from the esophagus. In severe cases, these problems can lead the patient into a coma.
