People are active and attentive because of a hormone released by the body, and this hormone is called cortisol. The hormone is released by the adrenal glands. It is an important hormone for body functions and when this gland is not functioning properly and not secreting this hormone a person feels excessively tired and lack of energy.
An abnormal adrenal gland can either produce less cortisol or excessive cortisol at the wrong times. If the cortisol production is high in the nights, then a person may suffer from insomnia. There are some food products which are known to alleviate the levels of cortisol like caffeine, for example. Even chocolate has the ability to do that.
Melatonin is another hormone that counter reacts with the effects of cortisol. In case a person has been diagnosed with adrenal fatigue and is suffering from insomnia as a result, then best treatment would be to increase the levels of melatonin to balance the effects of cortisol.
Some of the symptoms of adrenal fatigue include tiredness, weakness or pain in the muscles, insomnia and cravings for sweet foods. A person also may suffer from indigestion and irritable bowel syndrome simultaneously. Several of these factors may be contributing to the insomnia as well.
Melatonin can be taken in natural form, and in the form of supplements. Taking these supplements on a doctor’s advice can help to fight the condition of insomnia. Exercise is also an effective cure for insomnia. However, identifying the exact problem and cause of insomnia in case of adrenal fatigue is important for the cure.
