First Aid For Open Wounds

Open wounds can get infected very soon if they are not treated and covered. An open wound is a wound that is caused internally or externally and the body tissue is broken in that area. A knife cut, puncture, abrasions are all considered to be open wounds. There are different type of open wounds which expose the skin and the inner tissues to the outer environment.

The air that we breathe also is full of germs and when the skin is cut these germs can easily enter inside the body and that is why it is very important to cover open wounds. Deep open wounds need to be stitched by a physician and until you reach the hospital you should try to stop the bleeding by keeping the wound pressed. Always use cotton or gauze to do it.

To treat open wounds at home keep a solution of antiseptic liquid and try to clean the wound by dipping a piece of cotton in the solution and applying it on the wound directly. After you do this, clean the surrounding parts of the wound using a clean cloth and try to wipe away the blood so that you get a clear picture of the wound. If you feel the wound does not need stitches, you can put some antibiotic or antibacterial cream on cotton and apply it on the wound. Then either tie up the wound with a gauze or tape it to the skin using doctors tape. However, the bandage needs to be changed at least twice a week.
