Lungs Problems That Cause Chest Pain

Chest pain may be caused by variety of lung disorders such as pneumonia, pleuritis (inflammation of the lining of lungs), pneumothorax (bursting of tiny air sac in the lung tissue), pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung), asthma, bronchitis and so on. Here are some lung problems that cause chest pain.

Pneumonia: Pneumonia can also cause acute chest pain. Chest pain due to pneumonia is aggravated by sharp breathing condition. With pneumonia usually come other problems such as breathlessness, fever, cough and phlegm.

Pleuritis (Inflammation of the lining of lungs): This is an inflammation of the coverings of the lungs. The pain here is also sharp and aggravated by breathing and cough.

Pneumothorax (bursting of tiny air sac in the lung tissue): A collapsed lungs, pneumothorax, is caused by accumulation of air or gas in the pleural cavity between the lungs and the chest wall, making it hard for them to expand and for you to breathe. The pain here is usually one sided, sharp, starts suddenly and is aggravated by breathing.

Pulmonary embolism (Blood clot in the lung): A pulmonary embolism is a sudden blockage in the pulmonary artery, usually due to blood clot that discharges from the leg and reaches the blood vessels in the lungs. Pulmonary embolism blocks the smooth flow of oxygen rich blood to the lung tissues. This is rare life threatening condition. The pain here starts suddenly, it is acute and is aggravated by breathing.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH): Pulmonary hypertension is a rare lung disorder characterized by increased blood pressure in pulmonary artery, pulmonary vein, or pulmonary capillaries together known as lung vasculature, leading to shortness of breath and chest pain which is aggravated by physical exertion.

Apart from this other disorder of the airways such as asthma, bronchitis can trigger chest pain. Chest pain associated with asthma and bronchitis produces grey-yellow sputum.
