Coughing And Loss Of Consciousness

People lose their consciousness for several reasons. Some people faint when they cough excessively. This condition is called cough syncope and it is not a serious disorder. People lose consciousness mainly because of the brain. The brain needs fluids like blood and water to function normally.

The brain has to receive blood from the heart on a constant basis. The heart acts like a pump and for it to pump blood into the brain it should receive it from the body. Sometimes pressure builds up in the chest area and stops the blood from flowing out. Cough also creates pressure in the chest reducing the blood flow. When a person is coughing continuously severe pressure is created and the brain does not receive any blood due to this. This results in fainting for the person.

When the brain does not receive enough blood for even one or two minutes the person can faint. The same thing happened when a person id dehydrated also. While coughing a person should try to take deep breaths so that there is a gap created while coughing. Often when a person is coughing continuously they start feeling breathless after a few seconds. It is because when they cough they are not breathing in air or breathing out. This creates pressure inside the chest. Whooping cough and respiratory infections often cause such problems. Any respiratory infection causes severe cough and cold. The only way to avoid cough is by soothing the throat by taking medicines or larynges.
