Health News On Ortho Evra Patch

Health News On Ortho Evra Patch Manufactured by Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceuticals, Ortho Evra is a unique skin patch used as a contraceptive to prevent birth control and pregnancy.

Introduced in the year 2002, Ortho Evra birth control patch contains a unique combination of female sex hormones that prevent the process of ovulation and cause changes in the cervical mucous and internal uterine lining. As a result, it becomes really harder for the sperms to reach the uterus and also prevents attachment of a fertilized egg to the uterus. Hormones released from the patch include ethinyl estradiol (a synthetic estrogen hormone) and norelgestromin (a synthetic progestine hormone).

In spite of its convenience, Ortho Evra is in the news for all wrong reasons. According to studies conducted by FDA, the risk of developing blood clots is approximately two times higher in women using Ortho Evra in comparison with women using oral contraceptives. This is because the hormones in Ortho Evra are directly released into the blood stream whereas the hormones are absorbed through the digestive system in oral contraceptive pills. Women using Ortho Evra get exposed to approximately 60 percent more estrogen than that of other birth control pills. Higher levels of estrogen in the blood can cause a significant increase in the risk of developing blood clots, heart attacks, strokes, pulmonary embolism and other cardiac injuries. Many of these symptoms are potentially dangerous and can cause even death. Other significant side effects due to excess estrogen in the blood stream include weight gain and deep vein thrombosis.

As a result, the USFDA has recently directed the manufacturers to add a warning label on the patch. It is important that women considering using Ortho Evra patch should consult with their health care providers regarding the risks associated with the patch. As per the latest health news, the USFDA is continuing to monitor safety reports of Ortho Evra patch, manufacturers are conducting studies to figure out the relation between Ortho Evra and serious blood clots in women.
