Food additives are substances that are usually added to the food during the processing in order to store it for a longer time. Additives can be artificial colors, preservatives, stabilizing or thickening agents as well as antioxidants and flavor enhancers.
The additives that are added to the foods need to be mentioned in the ingredients list. Note that those additives that are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) department are safe to be used.

- Additives prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi that cause food poisoning.

- Some of the vitamin contents are destroyed by adding additives. For example, adding Caramel is found to cause deficiency of vitamin B6.
- Certain additives may cause allergic reactions to people like diarrhea, skin rashes, stomach disorders, chest pain, asthma, tingling sensation, nausea or increase in the body heat.
Though additives offer both advantages and disadvantages, it cannot be avoided by the food production industries as they preserve the food from getting spoilt. Hence, you need to be very careful while consuming food items which use additives in order to avoid medical complications.
It is better to eat freshly prepared hygienic food than consuming canned or processed foods on a regular basis. Also, it is better to avoid food items containing additives that destroy the nutritional value of food.
