Tungsten or Wolfram is a naturally occurring element that is found in several ores including wolframite and scheelite.

Tungsten reserves are abundant in countries such as China, Russia and Canada. Tungsten is a metal with a wide range of uses. Owing to its unique properties such as high melting point, hardness, strength, durability, and recyclability, tungsten is considered to be extremely versatile and valuable element. It is used in the manufacture of a large number of products ranging from light bulb filaments, special heavy metal alloys for specialized industrial cutting tools, automobile, energy, aircraft components, and munitions. Tungsten and some of its alloys, such as tungsten carbide (cemented carbide or hard metal) are wear-resistant materials and can withstand a lot of friction. Therefore they are used by the mining and construction industries.

Tungsten and its compounds are quite safe toxicologically. However, studies involving experimental animals and cell culture show that heavy metal tungsten alloys possess certain carcinogenic properties.

A new application area for tungsten is that of Therapeutic use. Tungsten can be used to treat a wide range of diseases in Homeopathic treatment.
