Diet That Can Boost Your Immune System Naturally

Having a good immune system means preventing diseases as your body has the enhanced ability to fight infections.

One of the best ways to boost your immune system is having a healthy and nutritious diet comprising of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains. All these foods are rich sources of antioxidants which help to combat free radicals. Many diseases like heart disease and cancer are caused due to free radicals as they damage the cells of our bodies.

In small amounts, free radicals are very beneficial for our body as they fight infections. However, in large amounts, they cause damage to the cells through a process known as oxidative stress. The best way to prevent oxidative stress is by increasing the amount of fruits and vegetables you eat.

Some of the fruits and vegetables that help boost your immune system are as follows:

  • Broccoli: This vegetable is very effective in fighting cancer. It contains a chemical known as sulforaphane which causes the production of Phase II detoxification enzymes in your body. These enzymes destroy free radicals and carcinogens before they can attack the cells of your body. Other sources of sulforaphane are cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, mustard, turnip green and bok choy.
  • Blueberries: Blueberries have the highest content of antioxidants compared to any other vegetable or fruit. These berries get their color from a pigment known as anthocyanin, which has powerful immune stimulating properties. Anthocyanin is an antioxidant and is extremely useful for protecting the capillaries in your body. In addition, blueberries help with urinary tract infections, mental health and memory.
  • Apples: They are a rich source of magnesium, iron, silicon and potassium. In addition, raw apples help in digestion, cleaning the intestines and fighting infections like fever and inflammation. Apples are also good for combating constipation due to the diuretic and laxative effect they have on the lower intestine.
  • Garlic: Garlic pods are powerful "antibiotics". They help to fight infections and also work effectively as blood cleanser, digestive stimulant and diuretic. Garlic is also known to clear the mucus membrane of the lungs, sinuses, throat and nose.
