Which Fruits Have Most Antioxidants ? ?

It is known that low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol gets oxidized and is responsible for the fat build up in the arteries.

This process is known as atherosclerosis and is the reason behind heart attacks and strokes. The use of antioxidant vitamin supplements were being tried to prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol but the results have not encouraging.

30 percent of Americans have been consuming antioxidant supplements with a fond hope that it can keep them away from cardiovascular diseases only to learn that the facts tell an altogether different story.

The American Heart Association does not recommend using antioxidant vitamin supplements until more complete data becomes available. On the other hand they recommend people to eat a variety of nutrient-rich foods which can provide vitamins, minerals and fiber.

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has developed a rating scale to measure the antioxidant content of various natural plant food. This scale is called Oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) which is used to compare different food sources for their usefulness as antioxidant providers. Different fruit have been compared using the ORAC scale.

Acai berry from the Brazilian rain forest is considered as the super fruit which has the highest ORAC count among fruits but it is not an agreeable fruit to eat. Hence it is consumed as sweetened juice. This may not be acceptable to calorie conscious consumers. In addition, there are issues such as freshness of fruit; the impact of cooking and the quantity to be consumed to obtain the beneficial results from these fruits are yet to be addressed.
