The food products we consume contain different types of fat. What really affects the cholesterol levels is the type of fat that you consume on a regular basis. The “bad” fats which can affect the cholesterol levels in the body are trans-fats and saturated fats.

However, these undesirable fats are generally added to processed foods to enhance flavor. Other types of fat which include polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats are referred to as “good” fats. They help in lowering the risk of diseases. 

The mix of the undesirable fats in the blood stream is what causes a rise in the cholesterol levels. Some of the ways to increase the consumption of good fat in your diet includes using liquid vegetable oils food cooking, replacing butter with margarines and spreads made from polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fats, avoiding food items where hydrogenated oil is primarily used and spraying vegetable oil to coat the cooking pans. Canola oil and olive oil are very good for health and can be used to replace hydrogenated oils containing saturated fats. 

Very high cholesterol levels in the blood can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases, heart attack, blockage in arteries and also stroke. Hence, it has to be kept under check by making simple changes in the lifestyle and dietary habits. 

By mentioning lowering the cholesterol levels in the blood we are actually referring to the LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the body as they are responsible for the health disorders related to cholesterol. High levels of HDL cholesterol actually are good for the body and reduce the risk of heart complications and diseases.
