Magnesium is an important nutrient that our body requires it on daily basis as it could be stored up in the body like other nutrients. Hence, it must be supplied to the body in the form of food or as a magnesium supplement in the form of tablet. Majority of the magnesium is present in the bones, some in the muscles, organs, body tissue. It is also present in the blood circulation.
Magnesium can be obtained to the body by consuming cashews, almonds, lentils, chocolates, millets, oysters, poultry, meat etc. Magnesium is very important to our health because it strengthens and relaxes the muscle and hence, the muscular cramps can be avoided. It also plays a very important role in regulating the carbohydrate metabolism especially regulates the glucose metabolism and the level of insulin secretion and thus keep the blood glucose level in check and prevents the person from acquiring diabetes.
Magnesium reacts with many enzymes and catalyzes many biochemical reactions that are required for the biosynthesis of deoxy ribonucleotides (DNA), ribonucleotides (RNA) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of the body. It is also forms complexes with the chlorophyll which is the pigment that gives green color to the leaves. The low level of magnesium can also lead to constipation, difficulty in swallowing, menstrual cramps, photophobia, breast tenderness, restlessness, panic attack and hyperactivity. Individuals, who suffer from low magnesium level, tend to eat more chocolates. At the same time, high levels of magnesium in the body often lead to diarrhea.
