However, the focus should be on what stops you from taking sodium content in enough quantities and how to regain back this essential nutrient as fast as possible. Sodium helps in a multitude of bodily functions right from regulating the fluids in the body to maintaining the blood pressure.
The common reason for low sodium levels are the hormonal changes. With the production of hormones in the adrenal glands, they keep the balance of sodium, potassium and water within the body. The low production of hormones from the adrenal glands can be a sign of Addison’s disease that is known to cause low levels of sodium. Similarly, an under-active thyroid can also result in the sodium levels going down due to the hormonal changes.

Some medications are known to make sweating and urination excessive in some people. The intake of such medications for use as antidepressants can result in the low levels of sodium. Having an illness, vomiting or severe diarrhea can also lead to drop the level of sodium in the blood.
Drinking too much of water when exercising is another reason why sodium level can go down in the blood. The reason it happens is that since a good amount of sodium is lost in sweating and having too much of water amidst heavy workouts ends up diluting the sodium present in the blood.
