Headaches during pregnancy are a commonplace condition. They are caused because of certain hormones generated at the time, circulation of increased blood and fluctuations in estrogen levels. However these are not the only causes.
Headaches are triggered off for a number of different reasons. Headaches may occur at any time during your pregnancy, but they tend to be most common during the first and third trimesters. Certain women who are prone to migraine headaches, find that these disappear during pregnancy.
During the third trimester, headaches are linked to poor posture and tension from carrying extra weight. Another condition which can give rise to headaches is called preeclampsia or high blood pressure during pregnancy.
Cluster headaches are more prevalent in men rather than women. It affects men usually in their twenties and continues to peak during their forties. Women are generally afflicted with this condition only late in life, when they are in their fifties, well past the age of pregnancy.
Prevention is the best course of action to avoid headaches during pregnancy. Leading a healthy lifestyle with adequate exercise, well-balanced meals and plenty of rest and relaxation goes a long way. Certain foods are also stimulants to migraine. These should be identified and avoided. Maintaining good posture during the third trimester is important.
However, if headaches persist, or if there is anything unusual, or if they are accompanied with blurred vision, sudden weight gain, pain in the upper right abdomen, and swelling in the hands and face, this is reason to visit the doctor.
