Pain in the hip joint can indicate various hip conditions and are felt as groin pain which needs to be distinguished from thigh pain, particularly upper thigh pain, buttock pain and side pain. Hip pain is a common problem and can be confusing and the causes for hip pain are many.
It is important to know the symptoms of the problem so that an appropriate treatment can be directed.
Causes of hip pain include arthritis, tendonitis, lumber pain, snapping hip syndrome, muscle strains, hip fracture, etc.
Severe pain in the hips can lead to several conditions like inability to walk comfortably, injuries that cause deformity around the joint, hip pain that occurs at night, pain in the hip that persists for more than a few days, inability to bend, swelling in the hip area after walking for a long distance, signs of an infection.
Rest and allowing the acute inflammation to subside is the best treatment to cure hip pain. Often it is the only step needed to relieve the pain. If the symptoms are severe, crutches or a cane may be useful.
Ice packs and heat pads are the most commonly used treatments for inflammation. Regular stretching the muscles and tendons that surround the joint can help with some causes of hip pain. Physical therapy is an important aspect of treatment of all orthopedic conditions. Physical therapists use different modals to increase strength, regain mobility or help return patients to their pre-injury level of activity.
