How To Alleviate A Toothache ?

You can suffer from a toothache at any given point and invariably it occurs due to a dental problem. When you suffer from a toothache, it is important to visit a dentist to determine the cause of the pain.

However, if you are unable to seek dental care immediately, you can help alleviate toothache through the following tips as prescribed by the American Academy of General Dentistry.

How to Alleviate a Toothache:

  • Gently floss in between the tooth that is aching to remove any food particles that may be stuck.
  • Rinse your mouth with warm salt water.
  • Take over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Remember, children should be given only acetaminophen.
  • Apply clove oil directly on the painful gum area or tooth. This works as an anesthetic and helps to alleviate the toothache temporarily.
  • If toothache is due to a trauma, applying cold compress on the face will help reduce the pain as well as the associated swelling.

Many people recommend using aspirin paste to alleviate toothache. However, experts advice is not to try this option as aspirin paste can burn the sensitive gum tissue. On the other hand, there are people who swear by this remedy and will use it whenever they suffer from a toothache and cannot get to a dentist.

These tips are meant to alleviate a toothache in emergency situations and should not be construed as professional advice. Remember, you should visit a dentist at the earliest to figure out why you are suffering from a toothache.
