Toothache is suppose to one of the most severe pains a person can experience. Imagine suffering from it and labor pain simultaneously! It has been seen that there are many women who suffer from toothaches during their pregnancy. Many gynecologists and obstetricians do not warn pregnant women about getting regular dental check ups and that is why women tend to neglect dental care during pregnancy.
However, a pregnant woman should know that having any infection in the mouth can pose a threat not just to the mother but also the baby. Mouth infections in pregnant women can cause premature birth, low birth weight babies, miscarriage in the first trimester or present a risk of developing gestational diabetes.
Pregnant women should take utmost care of their gums and go for routine cleaning of the teeth during the early stages of pregnancy. Increase in hormone levels in the body can lead to swollen gums unless teeth are kept clean. Swollen gums can make the teeth loose during pregnancy and when women clench their teeth during labor, it can cause irreparable damage to the teeth.
Eating healthy and nutritious food during pregnancy will ensure that calcium is not leached from the teeth which can cause tooth decay and subsequent toothache. In addition, even the child will get strong and healthy teeth.
Pregnancy causes food cravings and constant snacking can cause dental plaque to build up leading to gum problems and tooth decay. There are some dentists who recommend that pregnant women should also get their teeth cleaned in the second and third trimesters to avoid plaque build up. This goes a long way in reducing the number of cases of pregnant women suffering from toothache due to dental caries.
