Preschoolers and toddlers actually have a lot of energy in them and it is very important for a person to channel this energy into constructive activities. Parents who do not involve their children at this age in activities can become very destructive and problematic or aggressive in their toddler-hood.
Research also shows that toddlers who are involved in activities show all round development in cognitive skills, language skills, and motor skills. At the age of 2 or 3 toddlers like to do what ever their parents do like washing the car or doing simple chores around the house.
Collect materials around the house like old phone books, paper, and pictures and make your child tear the paper into tiny bits. You are letting the child develop his motor skills and also allowing feeling the texture of the paper.
Another activity you can do with a very small baby is in the bath tub and all kids love playing with the water. Allow them to splash the water or kick their legs in the water. This helps to develop the muscles on the hands and legs and is equivalent to swimming. However do not leave your child unmonitored during this activity.
If your toddler is around the age of 2 or 3, you can take them outdoors and play jump, skip and hop. This is an ideal activity that helps them to think in a pattern and also use their hands and legs. This activity also exercises the whole body and they enjoy it a lot. For them, imitating the parent is more fun than doing the activity itself.
