Detecting pregnancy is very convenient as it can be done at home with the advanced technology, and can be done as early as the first day of the missed period. Testing the blood in a lab and detecting the levels of HCG hormone work the same way. The latest pregnancy tests detect as low as 5 mIU/L of HCG. These sensitive tests can show a positive result within the seven days after ovulation.
But possibilities are that implantation of the embryo would not have occurred as yet. So, it may well be possible to determine pregnancy within seven to ten days after conception. The time required depends not only on the type of test done; but also on individual physiology.
There is more concentration of HCG in the first urine of the day. So it is important to perform this test during this time. The blood and urine tests performed in a clinic may be more accurate than pregnancy tests done at home. Many women choose to use home pregnancy tests, as clinical tests can be expensive, inconvenient, and time consuming. The amount of HCG present in urine increases with the progress in pregnancy. The amount of 25 mIU HCG in ten days doubles to 50 mIU at 12 days after conception. In the second week, it doubles again to 100 mIU. A home pregnancy test that is sensitive to 100 mIU may not be able to detect the level of 75 mIU HCG. Sometimes this early pregnancy test may show false negative result, but the same may change to a positive result after a few days.
