Tender Nipples In Second Trimester Of Pregnancy

During pregnancy your breasts begin to change and they continue to change throughout the pregnancy including second trimester. It is in the second trimester, breasts become large and bulky. In this process, your nipples become hypersensitive and tender.

Hormonal changes increases blood flow to the breasts and nipples due to which the nipples become tender and sensitive. Your nipples will grow larger and become more erect in order to feed the baby. Hormones in your body are preparing your nipples for lactation. In the middle of second trimester, nipples and areola double in size and a yellowish sticky fluid known as colostrums oozes out of nipples. The nipples and areola becomes dark in color, due to hormones that affect pigmentation of the skin. The milk ducts grows in size as they get filled with milk during second trimester. All this changes makes your breast more sensitive, particularly your nipples.

Apart from this you may also experience stretch marks and an itchy sensation around the breasts, particularly nipples. It is important to wear supportive bra throughout the pregnancy, particularly if you have hypersensitive and tender nipples. Tender and sensitive nipples also increase your sexual desire.

While the breast continue to grow throughout the pregnancy but tenderness in nipples may not continue throughout the pregnancy. If you notice red, scaly, itchy rash or burning sensation over and around the nipple and areola, you must consult your doctor as it may be the early sign of Paget’s disease of the nipple, an uncommon type of cancer that forms in or around the nipples.
