Chronic illness is a condition where the patient may be ill for a long time. There might be some relief temporarily with some medication, but the problems would still persist. Since chronic illness is a long term one, the patients may need to take medication for a long time or maybe through out the life also.

It is not easy to cope with chronic illness, because the patient will need to take precautions, almost all his life, there may be certain discomfort or certain symptoms associated with the illness and these may also last long.

In such circumstances, the patient may feel irritated and frustrated about his state; this is more relevant when the patient is a child. The parents of the child would play a very important role because they have to be a constant support to the child. It is important that the parents themselves maintain a positive state of mind, be very honest with the child about the illness and the treatments for the same. Provide as much as information as possible to the child with regards to the illness. It is important to involve the school of the patient, so that they can deal with the situation in case of an emergency. Encourage the child to take part in activities as well as make new friends. The child should not feel isolated because of his illness as chronic illness is not contagious.

Sometimes the child may be more psychologically sick than physically, and hence, it is important to make the child feel normal and not treat him as abnormal or with too much sympathy.
