Elderly people often have nutrient deficiencies because of reduced food intake and poor quality of food. That is why nutrition for the elderly lays stress of taking calcium, Vitamin E, Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Vitamin B12, Vitamin B6, magnesium, potassium, folic acid and fiber.

Nutrition for the elderly must have more fiber and antioxidants. As a person ages, the natural antioxidants in the body tend to become less effective. Therefore, these have to be supplemented through food. Elderly people should be encouraged to eat lots of fruits and vegetables like artichokes, blackberries, blueberries, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and plums. In addition, foods like beans, oats, oranges, raspberries and green peas should be eaten regularly to increase dietary fiber to help with regular elimination and maintain good cholesterol levels.

With all this, protein should not be neglected. An elderly person should consume around 1.0 to 1.25 grams of protein for each kilogram of body weight each day. Eating fish will help not just in improving protein intake but also Vitamin B12. Therefore, fish like salmon, sardines and flounder are the best.

As a person ages, his sense of taste tends to diminish and this could explain why elderly people have the tendency to add more salt in their food. However, nutrition for the elderly must include limiting sodium intake or else the elderly person may end up getting high blood pressure.
