Many children are affected by cerebral palsy and it has an adverse effect on the development and growth of the child. It has been seen that before a child becomes a teenager, he or she may get confined to a wheelchair on account of this health issue.
There are many treatments available to combat the effects of cerebral palsy. However, most of them aim to enhance mobility so that the affected child can move around and be independent for as long as possible. It has been seen that muscle spasms in the legs is quite common in those suffering from cerebral palsy and the intensity of the spasms can be excruciating. Such children will have to undergo intense physical therapy if they want to be mobile.
However, of late, Botox is being offered as a treatment option to children suffering from cerebral palsy. This treatment method helps in controlling the painful muscle spasms and helps keep the child mobile as much as possible.
As Botox is a neurotoxin derived from a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum, parents might be hesitant in allowing doctors to inject this toxin into their child. However, it has been seen that when children are given higher dosages of Botox, there is an instant improvement in their movements and considerable reduction in the muscle tone. The children have better ankle movements and relaxed leg muscles. While there are risks associated with giving Botox injections for cerebral palsy, the outcome and the improvements seen after the injections far outweigh the associated risks.
