Ever since breast augmentation procedures have started using silicone breast implants, there have been questions raised about their safety. As per the US FDA, until 2009, there were around 190,000 complications due to silicone implants and these include around 123 fatalities. Therefore, if you are planning on having silicone breast implants, you should educate yourself on the dangers of these implants. Also, remember that if you face any complications, your health insurance may not cover the treatment.
A study was conducted in the year 2006 which found that silicone breast implants that had platinum are toxic in nature, and the women with these implants who breastfed their babies could be passing on the toxin to their kids via breast milk. When women with silicone implants having platinum were tested, it was found that their blood, breast milk and other body fluids contained platinum.
Some women have several complications associated with these implants and they would have to undergo the trauma of more surgeries to rectify these complications. Women have complained of pain in the breasts, asymmetrical breasts, necrosis of the tissue and adjacent muscles, infection and also formation of wrinkles on the skin.
Another danger of silicone breast implants is toxic shock. This occurs when an infection sets in and the bacteria manage to find their way into the blood stream. Toxic shock can be dangerous and fatal.
When a woman has silicone breast implants, doing a mammogram to detect cancerous growths in the breast is a little difficult. Also, the procedure can be costly and may not give accurate results.
