The skin conditions of facial blemishes, wrinkles and skin pigmentation can be effectively treated with chemical peels. Chemical peels produce results by peeling off the outermost layers of the skin, thereby exposing the new blemish free layer. These peels comprise of certain acids, the composition of which decides the aggressiveness of the product.

Since these products are chemical based, therefore it would be prudent to use them under professional supervision. Light peels are manufactured by utilizing Alphahydroxy acids (AHAs) like glycolic, lactic, or fruit acids. These kinds of peels are beneficial in the treatment of fine wrinkles, dry areas, parts with uneven pigmentation and also acne.

Some of the temporary side effects of AHA peels include stinging, redness, irritation and crusting.

When the problem is slightly more deeply set in the skin, light peels may not present an effective cure. In such cases medium peels comprising of varying concentrations of Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) produce better results. However, at times just one TCA peel may not be enough to obtain the preferred outcome. Those undergoing the treatment should not expose themselves to sun for a few months. The most aggressive peels are those formulated from phenol. They are extremely invasive in action and produce optimum results when treating coarse wrinkles on the face, skin that is damaged due to sun exposure and pre-cancerous growths. However, such forms of deeper peels are to be applied only on the face.

One of the biggest repercussions of phenol peels is the resulting inability of the skin to manufacture pigments. Therefore, the person concerned would have to stay away from the sun. Other side effects caused by phenol peels include heart diseases and uneven pigmentation.
