That is why it is prudent for a person to know Type 2 diabetes food safety list.
There are certain foods that people with diabetes can eat without fear and certain foods that they should eat sparingly. Starch, for instances, is responsible for rise in blood sugar. However, it is not necessary for a Type 2 diabetic to completely give up eating starch. Rather the person should be looking to control the amount of starch he/she consumes at each meal. Six to 11 serving per day should be more than sufficient for a Type 2 diabetic according to the National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disorders. It is recommended that the patient eat starchy food that has high fiber content. This will help them to manage their diabetes better, as the fiber in the food will slow down the digestion of the food and subsequent rise of sugar in the bloodstream. So, a diabetic should be looking to eat peas, brown rice, whole wheat bread, oatmeal and whole wheat pasta.
The other food that diabetics should be looking to eat is fruits. However, fruits contain carbohydrates along with Vitamin C, potassium and folate. Nonetheless, fruits are important. So, following the American Diabetes Association's guidelines will help. The Association suggests eating three to four portions of fruit per day. Fruits such as apples, oranges, nectarine, peaches, plums, pears and bananas are good for Type 2 diabetes. It is better to eat the fruit rather than have their juices, as the fiber present in the fruit helps to manage blood sugar levels.
Diary products also contain carbohydrates. Hence, a Type 2 diabetic should control the intake of milk and yogurt. This can be done by limiting the servings to just 2 per day; and to ensure that the person does not consume too many calories, he/she should opt for low fat milk and yogurt.
Meats are not a source of carbohydrates, but they can add weight to a Type 2 diabetic. Hence, the amount of meat consumed should be limited to four to seven ounces per day. Also, the meat should be lean meat and low fat type, so that person does not consume too many calories or fat. The types of meat suggested for Type 2 diabetes include skinless poultry, fish, lean ham, egg white, lean pork and meat substitutes, such as tofu or egg substitutes.
