Type 2 diabetes is mainly found in adults. It affects the body’s absorption of glucose, which is the main source of energy. It is an autoimmune dysfunction that can be caused due to hereditary or a bad lifestyle. In Type 2 diabetes, the body becomes resistant to insulin. Knowing Type 2 diabetes symptoms will allow a person to seek early medical intervention.
Insulin is a very important hormone because it enables the absorption of sugar into the cells. When the body does not recognize insulin, absorption of glucose stops. Glucose and fats remain in the blood stream and travel to various vital organs. As a result, the cells of the body are starved and crave more energy. High levels of glucose reaching the vital organs can cause permanent damage to them. Untreated Type 2 diabetes can be fatal for a person within a short period of time.
Type 2 diabetes is a lifetime condition that has to be managed. There is no cure available for it. People with this condition have to exercise, eat healthily and take medications to control their blood sugar levels.
Initially, Type 2 does not show any symptoms. It can be detected through a random blood check. The symptoms are slow and gradual.
Some of the symptoms you need to look for are:
Frequent urination is caused when the sugar levels in the blood are high. The kidneys try to process the glucose and as a result they draw out more water from the blood to dilute the glucose. The water gets absorbed into the kidneys and that is why a diabetic will feel the urge to urinate every few minutes.
Frequent urination causes excessive thirst. The water in the blood is getting used up fast, so you feel thirsty often. Initially, when Type 2 is not diagnosed, a person feels an unquenchable thirst, which cannot be satiated no matter how much water he/she drinks.
Without insulin to support the cells in the body, the cells are unable to absorb sugar. They are starved for energy and this causes the muscles and organs feel tired. So, a diabetic will feel hungry more often.
Unintended weight loss is one of the classic symptoms of Type 2 diabetes. Even though you are eating more than usual, you still lose weight. Without the help of insulin, the body is using up the muscles and tissues to extract energy.
When the body’s cells are not getting any energy, people become irate and tired.
When blood sugar is very high, the fluids are pulled out of the lenses in the eyes. This results in blurry vision.
If you notice any of the above symptoms of Type 2 diabetes, it is best to get your fasting blood sugar checked at once.
