Robots in Medical Research :

The concept of artificial intelligence or robotics has revolutionized the entire concept of medical research. Robots are being widely used for performing multiple tasks in various private health care centers, public hospitals and medical research organizations.

Robotics came into existence with the objective of performing tasks that were considered repetitive by humans and required tremendous physical activity. Introduction of robots in place of human workers decreased the risk of injuries and the medical costs incurred to treat those injuries. Robots were also useful in recovering lost working hours as machines were able to perform more efficiently than human workers without getting tired.

Medical robots contain a computer-integrated technology that is supported by complex programming languages, controllers and advanced sensors so as to perform complicated surgical procedures in the most precise manner. These machines also contain other accessories including control units, programming terminal and a process-oriented software.

Robotic technology was primarily introduced into medical research for the purpose of performing operations related to minimal invasive surgery in a more efficient way. Later, systems were invented for performing surgeries including prostate surgery, hip replacement surgery and coronary bypass surgery. As of date, robots have a wide range of medical applications including performing several laparoscopic surgeries such as cholecystectomy, mitral valve replacement, bariatric surgery, hysterectomy, reproductive surgery and pediatric surgeries. The potential advantages of using robotic devices in medical research include reduction in time consumed, increased precision, improved efficiency, miniaturization and positional certainty and confined movement due to 3-dimensional magnification.

Advanced robotic technologies now utilize Wi-Fi technology that has opened other avenues such as telemedicine, thus integrating patients, research and clinicians.
