The polar bear is the biggest land predator in the world. It is also known as the sea or ice bear. It is slightly bigger than the grizzly bear and weighs as much as 1800 pounds. The polar bear lives mainly in Canada, Arctic Circle, North Pole, Russia, Denmark and Norway.
Right now the polar bear may be on the endangered list and hunting of these bears in almost all the countries is banned. One of the main reasons for the decline in the number of polar bears is global warming. The melting ice caps and is decreasing the habitat for the bears and they find it hard to find food. Several bears are also dying because of drowning. The melting ice caps are increasing the water levels in the ocean as a result which the polar bears are drowning. Some of the bears get stranded on islands of ice with nowhere to go.
The polar bear can eat up to 100 pounds of meat or more every single day. The hunt sea animals and walrus and seals for food. The polar bear cub is smaller than a human baby when it is born. The polar bear is covered with fur all over the body except on the eyes. They have thick layers of skin under the fur which helps them to keep warm. The polar bears are excellent swimmers and they can even swim under the ice.
