Not sure what food your duck enjoys eating? Read on to find out more. It is a common misconception among many that ducks love to eat bread. Do you know that feeding your ducks with excess of bread, crackers and other cereal products could make your pet obese and unhealthy.
Ducks require foods that are rich in proteins. Proteins play a significant role in the development and functioning of various organs in ducks. Failing to feed them with sufficient quantities will not only interfere with their growth, it will also decrease their resistance to various diseases significantly reducing their immunity levels.
Birds have an in built organ called “crop” on the esophagus which is designed to store food for a short period of time. Bread and other large particles can easily get stuck in crop leading to choking and even suffocation sometimes. Commercial pellets have high protein content and can be ideal for your ducks. Egg laying ducks need around 16 percent to 18 percent protein whereas non laying ducks need a slightly lesser protein content of 14 percent to 16 percent. Deficiency of protein can interfere in the egg laying process whereas an excess of proteins will lead to a condition called “angel wing” where the feathers end up sticking to each other.
Greens, hard boiled eggs, worms and cracked corn should form major ingredients in your duck’s diet. Provide lots of water as well, so that the duck can swallow the food with ease and clean its beak at the same time.
