Anxiety Disorder Symptoms In Canines

A dog will show several signs of anxiety when it has it. However, canine anxiety is not easy to identify because one of the biggest symptoms of anxiety is irritability and short temper. Generally, it is the dog’s natural state to express anger and irritability. Also, when the dog shows symptoms of anxiety, it is important to determine the reasons for the anxiety. (See Reference 1)
The symptoms of anxiety vary from dog to dog. Typically, dogs bark only when there is a good reason to bark. For instance, a dog will bark if it notices a stranger at the door or something suspicious. But some dogs bark for no reason and for the smallest of things. This may be a symptom of anxiety disorder. However, you cannot determine this in a single day. You would have to observe the dog for a certain number of days to conclude that it is suffering from anxiety disorder. (See Reference 1)
Some dogs hide or rather be left alone and they will seek refuge right behind the owner or seek comfort all the time. Some other symptoms of anxiety are yawning, panting, licking or shaking frequently. Some anxious dogs display excessive energy and they can become destructive. They seem to jump on a person too much and be over excited for no reason at all. (See Reference 1)
The good news is that there are medications to treat anxiety disorder in dogs. If you tell the vet the symptoms of these disorders, then he or she may give some effective medication to bring the symptoms down. Diagnosing anxiety can only be done by watching the affected dog closely. The best person to observe the dog is the owner. The problem with anxiety disorder in dogs is that if you do not seek treatment, then the dog may turn aggressive and display unwanted behavioral patterns. They may even get into a bout of anger and bite someone. It may also get out of your hands when they stop listening to you. However, as a pet owner, you will know the behavioral change in your pet the moment it seems different towards you. (See Reference 1)
In order to reduce anxiety disorder in the dog, you need to keep it in a quiet environment and also spend some time everyday with it making the dog feel loved and secure. Calming activities also help to overcome the problem.
