Side Effects Fish Oil

Fish oil is suggested for many people as a supplement. It is a rich source of Omega-3 fatty acid, and many people take it for its antioxidant properties. However, what most people do not realize is that there are side effects of fish oil too. That is why fish oil has to be taken carefully and after consulting a doctor.

Fish oil contains high amounts of Vitamin D and Omega-3 fatty acid. If you take these vitamins in large quantities, it can lead to vitamin poisoning. The toxicity can cause a whole lot of symptoms that affect the body adversely. This is the reason why it is recommended that people opt for fish oil supplements that are made from fish body oil rather than fish liver oil.

One more side effect of fish oil is the risk of heavy metal poisoning. Today, most ocean fish have heavy metals like mercury, lead, nickel, arsenic and cadmium. If the fish sourced for the oil contains these heavy metals, even the oil will contain them. Therefore, only use fish oil supplement brands that are well known and reliable.

Just because of the side effects of fish oil, it is not necessary that you have to stop taking the supplement. The oil has many health benefits that make it worth the risk. For instance, fish oil is extremely good for the heart, for certain skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, improving eyesight, enhancing the function of the brain, strengthening the immune system, and alleviating symptoms associated with gout, diabetes and arthritis.

If you do not want to suffer from the side effects of fish oil, make sure that you only consume supplements that are fresh, have high levels of DHA, free from all forms of contaminants and made by a brand that follows the guidelines of good manufacturing practices.
