Goldfish can eat variety of foods. They are considered omnivorous. They eat brines, shrimps, lettuce, peeled peas, krim, duckweed, elodea, bloodworms and some other types of shrimps. Since, these fishes are smaller in size they can eat very little amount of feed. Only during the breeding season they have been found to eat more.

The female goldfish should be fed more as they are the ones who take care of the babies from the male ones. Sometimes males tend to snatch away the babies food also. For a baby goldfish (fry) to grow up into a healthy one, it needs a balanced feed. Red flakes are also their favorites. The tiny little ones can be given variety of feeds which has all the essential nutrients. On a routine basis they can be fed stuff like blood worms, lettuce and peeled peas, and once they grow a little more, they can be given flakes. The little goldfish can eat herbs very comfortably. The little ones are generally fed these items so that it can be easily swallowed and absorbed.

It is amazing to watch goldfish mating. During this time they act almost like the mammals. You need to observe then closely to see their actions during mating. The way they eat their food during the breeding time is really worth watching. When the female is pregnant, she naturally needs more support. The male has been found to swim all across the water tank searching food for the females and also brings it near the mouth. The female on the other hand shows her acceptance by making some tender gestures.
