Sharks have been existent for a very long time say about million years ago. They are known to predate humans as well dinosaurs. Sharks have lived a long life even after several challenges thrown by nature. But now they are facing life threatening dangers and expecting a long life ahead for all these sharks is really very difficult.
There are several reasons behind such conditions that these sharks are facing in the modern times, but the one of the major causes include over fishing of several shark species by the recreational and commercial fishermen.
Several researches reveal that around 100 million sharks are known to be killed every year by the human beings which can roughly be estimated to around 11,000 every year. The numbers may vary in some cases but then the numbers are those mentioned by most of the researches and reports.
Commercial fishing is a very important factor towards the killing of sharks. In some cases, sharks are killed intentionally but in most of the cases, they turn out to be victims of something known as ‘bycatch’. Apart from the commercial fishing, recreational fishing is another such factor that contributes a lot towards the killing of these sharks.
Though the exact number of sharks being killed and caught every year cannot be made out but there is a slight idea about the whole scenario. Several sharks are being caught every year through various fishing tournaments. The recreational catch that is combined with commercial side includes killing of sharks. Though there is no clue regarding the exact time when these sharks may extinct but then it is also sure that the above mentioned activities are contributing towards their extinction.
