Some of the most famous artists in the American history of art include Ansel Adams, Richard Avedon, Robert Mapplethorpe, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jasper Johns, Roy Fox Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol.

Some of the famous American artists are listed below:

Ansel Adams was a renowned photographer whose black and white pictures are said to be par excellence. He mainly focused on landscape photography of American national parks, including the Yosemite National Park.

Richard Avedon was well known photographer, and his area of interest was photographing celebrities and fashion models.

Robert Mapplethorpe, also a photographer, concentrated on erotic nudes and flowers. His subjects were mostly celebrities, and preferred to work in his studio.

Jean-Michel Basquiat is popular for his neo-expressionist style of painting. Initially he gained fame as a graffiti artist. His name stands out for being the first African-American painter to obtain international acclaim.

Roy Fox Lichtenstein is acknowledged as a pop artist, whose domain of work was mainly industrial painting.

Another notable American artist, Jasper Johns is recognized for his contemporary style of work that includes painting and creating prints.

Barnett Newman was particularly famous for his paintings created in an expressionist style. Another name that is frequently taken in the abstract expressionist movement is that of Paul Jackson Pollock. He preferred solitude and had a rather unpredictable personality.

In the league of pop artists such as Lichtenstein comes to light the name of another great artist, Robert Rauschenberg. He gained popularity in the 1950s, when the focus shifted from abstract expressionism to pop art. He was very innovative in his style of work utilizing non-traditional materials and objects.

Norman Percevel Rockwell was an eminent painter and illustrator. He came in the limelight for his cover illustrations of the magazine, The Saturday Evening Post.

Susan Rothenberg’s work is a prominent artist of New Mexico. Her style of work is contemporary, and she is respected in the circle for having an independent and novel thought process.

Edwin Parker (Cy) Twombly Jr. is an artist who has supposedly distorted the demarcation between drawing and painting. He is recognized for creating huge calligraphic style graffiti paintings.

Andy Warhol was a multi-talented artist who made a name for himself as a painter, printmaker, and also a filmmaker. He played a significant role in the visual art movement.
