Michael Jordan And Advertisements And Alcohol

While narrating the success story of Michael Jordan, the ace basketball player, one cannot overlook his spectacular aura in commercials and endorsements.

The best known athlete in the world, Michael Jordan, is eminent for making the NBA, the success it is today and for leading the Chicago Bulls on a run of six NBA titles. He had all the traits of a winner with no fall outs. Once on the court, he could do it all - score, pass, defend and knock out the crowd with incredible dunks.

A player needs to be gifted with enormous talent to achieve these accomplishments but to be the legend, Michael Jordan; one also requires his work ethic and competitive spirit. Today, it seems unbelievable that he was actually cut from the varsity team in high school and two teams passed over him in the 1984 NBA Draft. However, Jordan swore to work even harder and the burning desire of success within got him named as ‘The greatest athlete of the 20th century’ by the ESPN, while the Associated Press ranked him second only to Babe Ruth.

After his retirement from professional basketball, Jordan kept himself occupied by staying in shape, playing golf in celebrity charity tournaments, spending time with his family in Chicago and not to miss endorsing various products.

An impressive advertisement has the potential to market any product. Advertising sells values, images, love, romance and success. Many people do not believe that advertising affects them, but it would be nearly impossible not to be affected. One can see advertisements everywhere - on clothes, shopping bags, bulletin boards and magazines. On the contrary, it might be a task to find a place without them.

Jordan's income from the endorsements is estimated to be several hundred million dollars. He became an institution with commercial endorsements. The list of Michael Jordan endorsement deals is longer and more prestigious than any other athlete in history. Nike, Coca-Cola, Chevrolet, Gatorade, Hanes, McDonald’s, Ball Park Franks, Ray-o-Vac and MCI are just a few of the brands endorsed by Jordan. Who can forget the success of his commercial deal with Nike for his Air Jordan shoes? The hype and demand for the shoes increased to such an extent that people were getting robbed of their sneakers at gun point! Also, when Jordan appeared in his Bulls Uniform on Wheaties boxes, sales of the cereal immediately took off. That is what one calls stardom!

Fame and dollars are not the only things that these advertisements bestowed on Michael Jordan. He was also rebuked by many for his alcohol endorsements. Jordan has had a long relationship with Gatorade, appearing in over 20 commercials for the company since 1991, including the ‘Like Mike’ commercials in which a song was sung by children wishing to be like Jordan. Critics opine that such commercials have a negative impact on society. A common man gets influenced by Michael Jordan’s confession that he always drinks Gatorade and enters into a make – believe world that tells him that if he also drinks Gatorade, then maybe he would turn out to be as great as Michael Jordan.

Well not only in commercials, Jordan’s Midas touch works as a speaker too! Since he’s world famous and his popularity is not limited to the basketball fans alone, a Michael Jordan speaker appearance is the ultimate incentive to get people to attend a conference or event. No matter whom the target audience is or what is being promoted, a Michael Jordan appearance always does the trick!
