Evander Holyfield Last Fight
Evander Holyfield fought his last fight on 20 December 2008 at the Hallenstadion stadium in Zurich, Switzerland against Nikolai Valuev for a mere sum of $600,000. This amount is considered to be least he has ever received during his pro boxing career. |
The fight was telecasted to more than 100 countries and was watched by over one billion people. Around 13,000 spectators were present in the stadium to watch this momentous fight.
The two stars from the boxing world, Nikolai Valuev and Evander Holyfield, were contending for the WBA title. The bout lasted for 12 rounds, and it was Valuev, who came out victorious.
The 46 years old Evander displayed great skills and boxing techniques while fighting. As a matter of fact, during the start of the bout, Evander was looking quite aggressive. In the 1st round, he scored 116/112, while in the 2nd round he scored 115/114. However, in the 3rd round the score was equalized to 114/114. As the fight progressed, Evander started looking quite exhausted. In the 7th round, it was Valuev who started dominating the fight. The entire scenario changed, by the time it was the 9th round. Holyfield started fumbling, and this gave the Russian a chance to prevail over Holyhield. Finally, Valuev was declared the winner in what was considered to be a controversial scoring.
Many boxing experts were upset at this decision. One referee had said that the match was a draw, while others felt that Valuev had managed to win by the skin of his teeth. There was even talk of rematch some time in the year 2009.
