Joe Frazier was christened Joseph William Frazier at birth. He was the first pro boxer from the US to win both the world heavy weight title and the gold medal at the Olympics. When Joe was in his early teens, he moved to Philadelphia in search of a good job. While working in an abattoir, Frazier started training as professional boxer. He developed his boxing skills under the tutelage of Yancey Durham and Duke Dugent at the Police Athletic League Gym.
Frazier's boxing career began with a win in 1962 when he won the Philadelphia Golden Gloves Championship. Then, he won the Middle Atlantic Golden Gloves heavy weight title for three consecutive years.
After he won the gold medal at the Olympics in 1964, Joe turned towards professional boxing. He defeated Woody Goss in the first round by way of a technical knockout. He also won 3 more fights in the same year, all by technical knockouts. In the mid-1960s, he reached the peak of his career by defeating famous heavyweight boxers like Doug Jones, George Chuvalo, Manuel Ramos, Bonavens, and Jerry Quarry. He was also recognized as the world champion by the State of New York when he ended up defeating Buster Mathis in the same decade. In the early 1970s, Joe ended being crowned the world champ in the heavyweight category by defeating Jimmy Ellis through a technical knock out.
