Joe Frazier Information

Joe Frazier was christened Joseph William Frazier at birth. He was the first pro boxer from the US to win both the world heavy weight title and the gold medal at the Olympics. Joe is also well known because of the historic fight between him and the great Muhammad Ali. Frazier ended up defeating Ali in the 15th round to hand Ali his first pro defeat in his long boxing career. While he was the world champ, Frazier is known to have had the highest number of knock out percentage.

Born on 12 January 1944 at Beaufort, South Carolina, Frazier was brought up on a farm along with his 12 siblings. His mother, Dolly Frazier, used to work in the farms owned by White owners, while his father, Rubin, worked as an overseer. When Joe was in his early teens, he moved to Philadelphia in search of a good job. While working in an abattoir, Frazier started training as professional boxer. He developed his boxing skills under the tutelage of Yancey Durham and Duke Dugent at the Police Athletic League Gym.

Frazier's boxing career began with a win in 1962 when he won the Philadelphia Golden Gloves Championship. Then, he won the Middle Atlantic Golden Gloves heavy weight title for three consecutive years.

After he won the gold medal at the Olympics in 1964, Joe turned towards professional boxing. He defeated Woody Goss in the first round by way of a technical knockout. He also won 3 more fights in the same year, all by technical knockouts. In the mid-1960s, he reached the peak of his career by defeating famous heavyweight boxers like Doug Jones, George Chuvalo, Manuel Ramos, Bonavens, and Jerry Quarry. He was also recognized as the world champion by the State of New York when he ended up defeating Buster Mathis in the same decade. In the early 1970s, Joe ended being crowned the world champ in the heavyweight category by defeating Jimmy Ellis through a technical knock out.

Frazier, also known by his nickname Smokin' Joe, is the member of rock-blues group Smokin Joe and the owner of Smokin Joe’s Corner restaurant and Joe Frazier and Sons Limousine Service. He also owns a Joe Frazier Gymnasium in Philadelphia where he trained young boxers.
