Sampras played his last Grand Slam at the Flushing Meadows in 2002 as he won the title there defeating Andre Agassi. Agassi and Sampras had a healthy rivalry that never ceased to make new all through the 1990s.
Sampras had held the World Number One ranking for six consecutive years, from 1993 right until 1998. This was a record unsurpassed in the Open era.
Sampras won the Australian Open in1994 and 1997, at Wimbledon in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000, and the US Open in 1990, 1993, 1995, 1996 and 2002. He first tasted victory in a Grand Slam tournament at the US Open in 1990, when he was able to defeat tennis greats like Andre Agassi, Ivan Lendl and John McEnroe, among others. Only 19 years and 28 days of age, Sampras was the youngest tennis player ever to win the U.S. Open men's title. He also dominated Wimbledon for most of the 1990s, claiming the title in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000.
Sampras had set a new ATP Tour record in 1993 by becoming the first player to serve over 1000 aces in a season.
