June 11, 1978
Richard Williams watches the French Open on television and is amazed at the prize money that pro players get. It is then he decides that any kids he has in the future will end up being pro tennis players.
September 26, 1981
As luck would have it, the Williams family were blessed with their fifth daughter and they decided to name her Serena Jameka Williams.
1985
By this time, Venus Williams, the older Williams' sister, is already being trained by her father. So, Serena decides to join the training sessions, which were held on a daily basis on public courts in Compton, a suburb of LA.
September 1991
The Williams family relocates to Florida so that the two Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, can join a professional tennis academy run by Rick Macci
April 5, 1992
By this time, Serena's talent is obvious as she was called to play an exhibition doubles match where she partnered the legendary Billie Jean King.
October 28, 1997
Serena makes her debut in the pro ladies circuit when she plays in Moscow for the Kremlin Cup.
November 1997
Serena establishes herself as a force to reckon with when she upsets top seeded players like Monica Seles and Mary Pierce in the Ameritech Cup. At that point, Serena is a lowly 304th ranked player.
January 1998
Puma offers a sponsorship deal to Serena, which she willingly accepts.
June 1998
After turning pro, it takes Serena just 8 months to be ranked among the top twenty ladies players; a feat unheard of in the WTA.
March 13, 1999
Serena goes on to play Steffi Graf in the Evert Cup final which she wins. It is here she claims that she views her older sister as her competition.
April 5, 1999
For the first time, Serena is ranked among the top ten ladies player when her ranking improves to nine.
Presently, Serena Williams is the World Number 1 female tennis player after having an astounding win at the 2010 Australian Open, where she defeated Justine Henin.
