Venus is the 4th daughter of Richard and Oracene Williams. She was coached by her father at a young age along with her sisters. However, it was just Venus and her sister, Serena, who showed an aptitude for tennis. According to some news articles, Richard Williams decided that if he had any more daughters, they would become tennis players. He decided this based on the amount of money tennis players were winning in different tournaments. And, a few years later, Venus and Serena were born.
Richard coached his two daughters by educating himself about the sport by watching videos and reading books. The family at that time lived in Compton, California, which was known for its gang wars and street fights. Although it was an unsafe neighborhood, Richard wanted his daughters to know what awaited them if they did not excel in life.
Venus and her sister started their tennis learning in the local courts of Compton. Venus was hardly 4 years old when started her training. She also honed her playing skills by watching matches on the television. Before long, Venus ended up being the number one player in the division for players aged under 12.
In the early part of the 1990s, the Williams family moved to Florida to help Venus and Serena improve their playing skills. Here the sisters enrolled at the academy run by Rick Macci. Because of her temperament and her love for tennis, Venus was home schooled. She used to practice for 6 hours a day.
At the tender age of 14, Venus became a professional ladies tennis player. And as they say, the rest is history.
