When Did George Lucas Create Star Wars ?
In 1971, Universal Studios consented to make American Graffiti and Star Wars as a twin-picture contract with George Lucas. |
Star Wars in the initial concept was later rejected because the story was too difficult to understand. Lucas then went on to write several drafts and the fourth, completed in 1976, was made ready for a film production.
At that stage Lucas realized that his conception of the story was beyond the capacity of a single story. He anticipated it would comprise three trilogies or nine films to narrate.
George Lucas has often said that his original idea for the project that evolved into Star Wars was to remake the Flash Gordon movie serials from the 1930s. Despite the plot changes, the Star Wars films are still bursting with influences from the Flash Gordon movie serials, including the Rebels vs. the Imperial Forces, Cloud City, the "soft wipes" between scenes, the underwater city with a manta ray-shaped sub and even the famous "roll up" which begins the movie. The subtle lesson Star Wars borrows from Flash Gordon is the idea of a fairytale in which technology plays the traditional role of magic. This idea ultimately came from H.G. Wells. He arguably invented the genre we now call "science fiction" in his first novel, The Time Machine.
So far six films and three animated series have been produced for television, with a live-action series and a 3D CGI animated series in pre-production as well as a 3D CGI full-length theatrical movie. Following the success of the movies and merchandising for both the original trilogy and its spin-offs, two cartoons were created for the younger fan base.
Box office revenue as of 2008 has totaled approximately $4.3 billion.
