Timeline of Oprah Winfrey:
1954: Oprah was born on January 29, 1954 in Mississipi to unmarried parents, Vernon Winfrey a coal miner and Vernita Lee a housemaid.
1954-60: Lived with her grandmother, Hatti Mae Lee for 6 years.
1960: At age 6, she moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to live with her mother. Raped by her cousin and uncle.
1968: Runs away from home. Gives birth to a boy, who died soon. Moves to Tennessee to live with her father.
1970: Reads the news at a local radio station while still in High School. Earns a scholarship for her communication abilities.
1985: Graduated from Tennessee University with a degree in Speech and Performing Arts. Is the youngest and first African-American to become a TV news anchor.
Conducted the 6o’clock news anchor and reporter at WJZ – TV Baltimore, Maryland.
Meets her best friend Gayle King, a production assistant there.
Co-hosts a talk show with Richard Sher.
Moves to Chicago, Illinois,
Hosts a morning talk show.
Co-starred in Steven Spiegel’s movie and earned a reward.
1986 : The Oprah Winfrey Show was hosted and produced by Winfrey - expanded for a full hour and broadcast nationally.
1987: Oprah won her first Emmy Award for best talk show host and best show.
1988 onwards: Oprah acted in many movies, documentaries and TV programs.
