Where Did Edgar Allen Poe Live ?
Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 19, 1809 to Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins Poe and David Poe. Both his parents were actors. He was the second of the three children born to them. He had an older brother, William Henry, and younger sister, Rosalie. Edgar’s parents led nomadic lives as they used to perform on stage. |
When Poe was just a year old, his father deserted the family and soon after that his mother died in 1810. He was adopted by John and his wife Frances Allan. John was a successful businessman in Richmond, Virginia. They took Poe to Richmond and baptized him in an Episcopal church. That is when he was named as Edgar Allan Poe. The Allans did serve as a foster family to Poe, but they did not adopted him formally.
For the first 7 years of his life, Poe lived in Richmond. After that the Allan family moved to England in 1815. The Allan family home was in Irvine, Scotland and this is where Poe went to a grammar school. He also studied in a boarding school in Chelsea until 1817.
In 1820, the Allans returned to Richmond in Virginia. Poe returned with them and in 1825, he joined the University of Virginia. He studied languages at the university and also art and poetry. However, due to his habits of gambling and alcoholism, Poe’s father and he were estranged, and Poe discontinued his university education. He returned to Boston later and died in Baltimore.
