Robert Frost And Family
Robert Frost was born to Prescott Frost Jr. and Isabelle Moodie in San Francisco, California. His mother was from Scotland and father from England. His father was a teacher by profession and he also served the San Francisco Examiner as an editor. His father died abruptly, and the family had to move to Lawrence in Massachusetts. They were looked after by Frost's grandfather, William Frost. Frost graduated in Lawrence High School. His mother joined a church and she even baptized him. Later Frost changed his mind about it as an adult. |
Though Frost talks a lot about rural life in his work, he mainly grew up in cities. He went to Dartmouth College and got accepted into the Delta Theta Chi fraternity. However, Frost did not finish college. He returned home after just 2 months and started teaching and doing odd jobs. He even helped his mother out who was also a teacher.
Frost's personal family life was full of despair. He witnessed many of his family members dying. His father died due to tuberculosis, while his mother succumbed to cancer. His mother also used to suffer from depression frequently. In 1920, Frost had to commit his sister to mental asylum. It is believed that depression ran in his family. In 1947, he had to admit his daughter, Irma, to a mental asylum.
Frost had 6 children. His son Elliott died due to cholera, another son, Carol, committed suicide, and his daughter Marjorie died because of a puerperal fever that she developed a few days giving birth to her child. Another daughter, Elinor Bettina, died 3 days after her birth. Just two of his children survived him. Also, Frost's wife, Elinor, first developed breast cancer and a year later, in 1938, she succumbed to a heart attack.
