Shel Silverstein Simile Poems
Shel Silverstein was born on September 25, 1932 in Chicago. He was most popular as a children’s book writer, but his literary work included several other genres. He was one of the poets and authors who was multi talented. He composed several songs and was a folk singer too. He was also very popular as an adult cartoonist, and worked with several popular magazines of his time. |
Many of the poems that Shel Silverstein has written for children are considered to simile poems. A simile is a figure of speech that is taken to compare two very unlike things. It is introduced with words 'like' and 'as'. This particular style has been adapted by several popular authors from time to time.
Here are a couple of examples and works of Silverstein which can be included in simile poems. These two poems are among his popular works that children love to read.
Melinda Mae
Have you heard of tiny Melinda Mae,
Who ate a monstrous whale?
She thought she could,
She said she would,
So she started in right at the tail. And everyone said, "You're much too small,"
But that didn't bother Melinda at all,
She took little bites and she shewed very slow,
Just like a little girl should...
...and eighty-nine years later she ate that whale
Because she said she would!!!
The Dragon of Grindly Grun
I'm the Dragon of Grindly Grun,
I breathe fire as hot as the sun.
When a knight comes to fight
I just toast him on sight,
Like a hot crispy cinnamon bun.
When I see a fair damsel go by,
I just sigh a fiery sigh,
And she'd baked like a 'tater-
I think of her later
With a romantic tear in my eye.
I'm the Dragon of Grindly Grun,
But my lunches aren't very much fun,
For I like my damsels medium rare,
and they always come out well done.
