When Was Shel Silverstein Born ?

Sheldon Silverstein was born on September 25, 1932 in Chicago Illinois. He died in Key West, Florida on May 10, 1999 at the age of 68. Not much is known about Shel’s childhood. However, he would make occasional references his life in his poems or books.

In the 1950s Shel joined the army and served in Japan and Korea. He started to draw cartoons for the army magazine. This work later led him to the popular Playboy magazine where he became a cartoonist.

Most people who have read Silverstein's book have never realized that he never meant to write children’s books. It was Ursula Nordstrom who first persuaded him to write children’s books and poetry. Shel actually discovered that this work was very interesting for him and he could explore several literary aspects by writing children’s books.

Most traditional poets and authors believed that they should continually read others books and works so that they can polish their works. However, Shel never followed this rule and yet he was very good. He studied music for a short while in Chicago College of Performing Arts and learned to play the guitar. He also composed several songs and collected folk songs as well. He was known to sing his own compositions occasionally. He also loved to travel, and ended up living in most of his favorite places like Greenwich, Martha’s Vineyard, Key West, and Sausalito in California.

Some of the books written by Silverstein for children were:

  • Lafcadio: The Lion Who Shot Back (1963)
  • A Giraffe and a Half (1964)
  • The Giving Tree (1964)
  • Who Wants a Cheap Rhinoceros? (1964)
  • Where the Sidewalk Ends (1974)
  • The Missing Piece (1976)
  • A Light in the Attic (1981)
  • The Missing Piece Meets the Big O (1981)
  • Falling Up (1996)
  • Draw a Skinny Elephant (1998)
  • Runny Babbit (2005) (published posthumously)
  • Don't Bump the Glump! and Other Fantasies (2008, originally published in 1964)
